"CAT” FOR MOTOR BANDIT. “Young, strong and violent nicn must be shown thal if the> tieat- mtn older than themselves with violence they must be punished in a way they understand.” This comment was made by Mr Justice du Parcq at Birmingham Assizes recently when passing sentence of 12 strokes' with the cat-o’-nine- tails and nine months’ hard labour on Charles Sherrington, aged 21, general dealer, who was found guilty of robbery with violence, together with another man, and also of taking a motor car without the consent of the owner. The case was a sequel to an attack on Mr William Welch, cashier to Wakefield and Sons, of Aston, on September 27, when he was returning from Lloyds Bank with the wages. Mr Welch went to the bank at 2 p.in , and was returning when two men attacked him, took £l6 2s 10d from him, unit made off in a car, which was found abandoned. Mr Welch identified Sherrrington as the driver of the car, but Sherrington, when charged, declared his inno- J cence. Evidence was given of finger- ! prints taken from the car and from ; Sherrington, and Detective Inspecfir Cherrill, of Scotland Yard Finger] rinl Bureau, stated that in his view these ' fingerprints were Identical.
