MAORI WITH £7OO. LOOKING FOR MOTOR-CAR. SALESMAN’S DREAM COMES TRUE. Here is a real “ recovery after the depression ” story, states the Taranaki Herald. On Tuesday a Maori walked into a New Plymouth garage. He was elated, mysterious and voluble and he wanted to buy -a car. The first person he met was a garage mechanic, to whom he explained what lie wanted, meanwhile producing a huge roll of notes.
So llie mechanic went off to find ins “boss,” to report that liiere was “a Maori out there with money all over him.”
Here was a situation car salesmen dream of—a man with money wanting to buy a car, furthermore, coming as a supplicant rather than having to be hunted up. It was no time before the Maori was being shown cars, and seeing something he “ liked,” he was taken for a demonstration run. He was quite satisfied with the car’s performance, but said he “would like the missus to sec It ” before he bought it. Visit to Post Office. Then as a gesture of good faith lie dived into his pockets, -bringing out roll after roll of bank-notes, explaining that lie had received sonj,e money from bis -solicitor a few liours previously. Tho salesman was suitably amazed, but thought, the Maori should bank the money, instead of carrying it round in liis pockets. “ Anyone might knock you on Hie head and rob you of your money,” lie said. “ Think so? ” “ Come along. I'll drive you up to tlie Post Office and you can bank your money.” “Think that's a good place?”
The salesman (hough!, if was and the Maori was driven to the Host Office, saying that lie would bring “ the missus “ in to see the car some other day. After a few minutes he emerged from the Post Office buildings, still exuding elation and satisfaction.
