ELECTORAL REFORM
NO ACTION PLANNED, STATEMENT BY PREMIER. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Electoral reform is not at the moment on the Government’s programme for the coming session, according to a statement made by the Prime Minister, Mr Forbes, who is visiting Christchurch, but Cabinet has all the material information it needs on the subject, and will be ready to deal with it when the time comes to review the electoral laws generally. “If any demand exists in the country for a change of the electoral system, it must have developed during my absence,’’ Mr Forbes said. “I doubt whether there would be any large measure of support in the present Parliament.
“The preferential voting bill was introduced by a private member, but iL was not proceeded with, presumably because the member found there was no evident enthusiasm for it.”
