AGAINST ALCOHOL
INTERESTS OF ALLIANCE
TEMPERANCE WORKERS MEET.
The annual meeting of the South Auckland branch of the New Zealand Alliance was held in the St. Paul’s Schoolroom yesterday, when the, president, Mr J. R. Eow, presided. A letter of greeting was received from the general secretary, Mr J. Maiton Murray, who made suggestions for the future activities of the South Auckland area. After the adoption of the president’s report (published yesterday) and statement of accounts, various remits were considered hy the meetinff. Mrs .T. M. Jones spoke in -support of the motion that public attention should be called to the serious menace confronting the community by reason of indulgence in alcoholic liquors af dances, in -the vicinity -of dance halls, and at social functions; and that an appeal 'be made to all responsible men and women to discourage and discountenance .such drinking in possible way. Mrs Jones stated that at recent dances claret cup had been provided, while it was known that others has brought their own liquor. While some dance patrons may not have been the worse for liquor they were certainly under the influence of teaching of 'scientific temperance should be at once instituteu in the schools. It was bad enoug-i foi men to drink, but when women commenced drinking it was too well known what the natural consequences would be. They were liable to become poor mothers and even less worthy citizens. Appalling Ignorance. In -endorsing Mrs Jones’ remarks, Mr J. Treloar said that the ignorance among young people in regard to alcoholic liquor was, appalling, it was vital that the physiological .effects of alcohol should be made widely known and educational work among -the young people, should be commenced immediately. Mr F. A. de la MMare, in agreeing with the views of previous speakers, stated that indulgence in alcohol was undermining the morality ot the country, and the education -oi tne young peoeple was the surest means ■of combating this alcoholic evil-t-Qn being put to the- meeting the motion was-carried unanimously. It was moved by Mr J. Treloar that the attention of the Automobile Association -be called to the report made by the British Medical Association at ■the instance of the Minister of f -i’ ra ° s ‘ port In England in respect to alcohol and motor-driving- In speaking in support of -the motion Mr Treloar stated that it was -almost Impossible to register a conviction of a motorist under the influence of alcoholic liquor unless 'the motorist was practically “blind” drunk. After a brief discussion this motion was also passed unanimously-•Mr-F.A. do la Mare was the mover of thb motion that the attention of the Government be called to the notorious s-laokness in administration of -the Licensing., Aot,. In the opinion of the conference no one exoept a lodger or an inmate of a hotel should be served with liquor after licensing hours. Mr do la Mare said the matter in question needed little explanation, and it would ' appear that liquor could be obtained any time during the day or night., . The motion was -carried unanimously.
