THAT WELL-TRIED SYSTEM.
. (To the Editor.) Sir, —We have been looking forward to an explosion amongst your pessimistic money cranks over the rise in butter and the continued prosperity in Britain. As a rule the least breath of the return to prosperity is to them like a red rag to a bull —or, perhaps,, a better simile would he the diningroom carpet catching fire—for they all rush together directly and try and stamp it out. It is very amusing their ascribing crime, poverty, bankruptcies, suicides, national enmity, war, etc., to the present monetary system. Each of those subjects lias a little story "of its- own. Why not add drunkenness, debauchery, gambling, Indecency, cancer, smallpox, etc.? It as still more amusing to hear them say they know how to eorreot all this- In 24 .hours It brings one back to the old axiom, “Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread.” I notice that Mr John Sykes’ protege, Canada, has thrown out social credit, apparently not wishing to be the first fool of the family.—l am, etc., W.L.C. Hamilton, August 5, 1935.
