TRAINING UNEMPLOYED.
SETTLEMENT SOCIETY'S SOHEME APPROVAL IN WELLINGTON. “The Cabinet Ministers whom I interviewed, in Wellington found warm praise for the work of the society and a very .favourable reception met the proposals to utilise the'Waikato Land Settlement Society’s properties as a farm training ground for unemployed,” commented Mr D. V. Bryant, chairman of directors of the society, speaking to a Wrfilcato Times reporter to-day on liis return from Wellington.
Air Bryant said that application had been made to the Unemployment Board by the society to erect 12 hutments on the Whatawliata estate and on the ltolo-o-rangi block supplementing the 12 hutments; which the ' society had erected at Whata\vhata and so permitting the accommodation r of 36 unemployed during training. This number -would be in addition to the prospective settlers participating in the society’s major scheme., . ~ “ The mailer will lie considered by. tho Unemployment Board hut, from the tenor of. the opinions.’.given by the Ministers in Wellington I. am very, hopeful’, that the scheme, will be approved,” added Air Bryant. The society’s proposal is that unemployed men should be tried out and trained on l,heSettlements and if they proved satisfactory they could be recommended for farm positions. The directors would continue in touch with the men, assisting, -thorn and strengthening any weaknesses that might develop cither in their work or cornua lability. The Unemployment Board would bo required lo pay the men’s wages during (he lime they were engaged on Hie farms but there would he no real loss lo the Government as the men concerned were already receiving pay in the towns.
