LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION.

GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE. MR LYONS TO STAND. (By Telegrapn. —rress Association*) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The official Government candidate at the forthcoming Lyttelton by-election will be Mr M. E. Lyons. The nomination of Mr Lyons was ratified unanimously by a large meeting of Lyttelton electors held in Christchurch today.

Mr Lyons lias been secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association since 1928, and he is also secretary of the New Zealand Sheepbreeders’ Association. He was born in the Wairarapa in 1889, and was engaged in fanning in Hawke’s Bay until 1910, when he entered journalism, ■specialising in agriculture. He was agricultural editor of the Christchurch Sun for some years. During the Great War he served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. At the general election in 1925 Mr Lyons contested the Lyttelton seat against the late Mr J. McCombs, M.P., in the interests of the Reform Party. He was declared elected with a majority of eight, but was unseated by a decision of an Election Court, as electors had been enrolled in Lyttelton who resided over the boundary. Mr Lyons has been a member of the Christchurch City Council since 1927, and of the Christchurch Domains Board since 1930. He is a member of the council of the Royal Agricultural' Society. LABOUR SELECTION. FINALITY NOT REACHED. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. It is not likely that the name of the Labour Party’s candidate at the Lyttelton by-election will be announced before Friday at the earliest, according to a statement made by Mr W. Nash, M.P., president of the party. He said definitely that no selection had yet been made. THE TIMARU BEAT. TIMABU, Wednesday. A former rector qf the Timaru Boys’ High School, Mr William Thomas, has agreed to accept nomination for the Timaru scat at the general election as an Independent Nationalist candidate. The present. Labour member for Timaru is Mr C. Carr.
