RUGBY FOOTBALL

HAMILTON UNION AFFAIRS MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS PLAYERS SUSPENDED. Mr A. E. Gibbons presided at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the Hamilton Rugby Football Union last evening. The secretary of the Waikato Hockey Association wrote requesting the postponement of all Rugby matches on the date (July 6) of the visit to Hamilton of the touring Indian hockey team. —It was decided, after some discussion, during which the fullness of the senior programme was emphasised, to defer a detinite decision pending the discussion of the matter by the Junior Advisory Board, as it affects lower grade fixtures. The junior board reported having dealt with several players who were ordered off for offences on the field on Saturday. In the case of a first junior player who was ordered off for fighting and who was further reported for refusing to leave the Held, and subsequently insulting the referee, the junior board awarded a punishment of three Saturdays’ suspension, but the management committee decided that it would require his presence before the committee at its next meeting, the suspension to operate in the meantime. Another player of the third grade who was ordered off for attempting to assault an opposing player during a scuffle in which he was not directly concerned was awarded two Saturdays’ suspension and a reprimand. In this case the board’s punishment was confirmed. In another case of a first junior player who was ordered off- for fighting it was stated that the player was not the aggressor, and that no further punishment was to be imposed. Congratulations to All Blaoks. It was decided to write to the \Vaipa Union and- Ponsonby Club requesting that the Hamilton Union’s congratulations be tendered to J. GWynyard and D. Solomon on their selection as New Zealand representative players. The secretary of the South Auckland Union wrote offering to visit Hamilton with his union’s senior representative team on September 21.it was decided to request an earlier date, the matter being left to the secretary to arrange. The secretary of the Rangitaiki Union advised that his union’s representative team would be unable to visit Hamilton on June 22.

A request from the Matamata Union for referees to control the MatamataHamilton Peace Gup match was referred to the Referees’ Appointment Board.

JUNIOR ADVISORY BOARD. The Junior Advisory Board had two further cases of rough play to deal with at its weekly meeting, in the first instance the player concerned at first refused to leave the field when ordered to do so by the referee, but was prevailed upon to do so by spectators. After the match the player spoke insultingly to the referee. The board took a serious view of the mailer and decided to suspend the player for three playing Saturdays, administer a severe reprimand and ask him to apologise to the referee. in the second incident a player took it upon himself, to retaliate against an opponent whom iio considered had attacked a team mate. The board considered there was no excuse for any player taking the law into his own bands, and imposed a penalty of suspension for two playing Saturdays, together with a severe reprimand.

QUEEN CARNIVAL PROJECT.

SUGGESTED OPENING CEREMONY

A scheme for the opening ceremony of the Hamilton Rugby Union’s Queen Carnival was submitted to the Management Committee meeting last evening by Mr C. G. Hunt, the carnival secretary. Mr Hunt staled that subject to municipal consent it was proposed to open the Queen Carnival with a procession to be held on Saturday, June 29. The procession, which is to assemble in Knox Street, is to consist of the Municipal Band, the Fire Brigade, four decorated lorries carrying four Queens and their attendants; decorated motor cars, trade exhibits, decorated bicycles and lhe like. Tiic procession is lo leave at 2 p.m. for Rugby Park via Victoria Street, Hostrcvor Street, and Hinemoa Street. A parade of footballers is to assemble on No. 3 ground at 2.15 p.m., all players under the jurisdiction of the Union to participate.

The entire procession is to march around No. 1 ground and then form up on the ground for judging. The Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, and the president of the Union, Mr A. E. Gibbons, will address the crowd while the judging is in progress. Rugby Park is to be decorated with bunting and souvenir (Continued in next column.)

programmes are to be printed and sold in aid of the carnival funds. A loudspeaking device is to be installed at Rugby Park to broadcast the speeches and the results of the judging. Members of the committee commented favourably on the scheme and the suggestions as submitted were approved. ,

ALL BLACK LEADERS SELECTION TO-NIGHT. The New Zealand Rugby Union will proceed a stage further in completing the All Black team for Great Britain this evening when the captain and vicecaptain will be appointed. It is expected that the selection will take some time as there are several candidates whose chances are favoured. F. D. Kilby, captain of All Black teams since 1932, and E. R. G. Steere, 1933 vice-captain, failed to catch the eyes of the 1935 selectors, making the task more difficult.

It appears that J. n. Page, who was AH Black vice-captain in Australia last year, anti C. J. Oliver, captain for Canterbury many times, have the best claims while J. ilore, Otago and South Island captain, also has to be considered. Other names that have been mentioned include those of T. 11, C. Caughey and M. Corner but neither lias had much experience in leadership and it is expected that J. 11. Page will be captain with J. Ilore, vicecaptain.
