PANMURE MYSTERY
A POSSIBLE CLUE
DISCOVERY OF CLOTHIMG.
ARTICLES FOUND BY BOYS
AUCKLAND, Friday
A new line of Investigation In the Identification of the body of a woman, which was found in the Tamakl River at Panmure on Sunday, Is presented by the report yesterday of the discovery of a bundle of feminine clothing in the river about four weeks before the body was recovered. Clarence Smith, of Panmure, and John Andersen, of Mount Wellington, both of whom are 15 years of age, came across the . floating bundle In the Tamakl River a few hundred yards up-stream from the Panmure Wharf, ■where the woman’s body, which was unclad except for a singlet, was found. They said yesterday they were fishing when they found the articles, which were examined casually. Although they were uncertain concerning the date they definitely recollected observing a dress, a stocking, a piece of travelling rug and other garmentsThese were wrapped in a woman s outer coat and tied with a strip of green flax.
Discovery Probably on May 6.
The hoys accounted for their failure to remember the date because of their frequent fishing trips In the vicinity, and the number of public holidays at that time. They believed the occasion was either Anzac Day, April 25, or the day of the King’s Silver Jubilee, May 6. They inclined to the second date as the more likely day of the discovery. So far the police have received remarkably few suggestions concerning missing women, in spite of inquiry throughout New Zealand. The main question is still identification, and it is admitted that there Is considerable doubt whether this will be possible. The post-mortem examinations, which are being conducted with great attention to detail, have not been completed. No trace 'has yet been reported of the missing half-caste Maori girl from Te Puke, Miss Mary Elizabeth Raymond, who was last seen in the oitj on May 1.
