BREACH OF PROBATION.

“Everything possible has been done without success to get this young man to rehabilitate himself," Detective A. J. White told Mr S. L. Paterson, 8.M., In the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, ■this morning, when Leslie William Springett (19) appeared on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his probation! Detective White explained that the accused was committed for theft at Hamilton on February 15, and placed on probation for 12 months. His conduct since had been far from satisfactory. He had been in several places of employment only temporarily, and In one place a lot of trouble was taken to secure for him a job on a farm at Hotokauri, but lie proved most unsatisfactory. He had taken up new activities recently which were most undesirable.

The probation officer said he had done everything possible to get the accused to improve himself. “It is clear that you have not appreciated the leniency extended to you,” remarked the Magistrate to the accused. "The best thing for you is a short experience of what prison is like." Sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed.
