BUTTER FOR EXPORT
CONCERN IN AUSTRALIA
FAILURE TO IMPROVE QUALITY. LOWER THAN YEARS AGO. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. CANBERRA, April 30. The Federal Ministry is gravely perturbed over the failure of the Australian dairying industry to improve the standard ol' export butter. The acting-Prime Minister, Dr. Earle Page, stated to-day that the quality now is lower than several years ago. Danish butter was toeing sold in Britain at is 3d a lto. and Australian at only lOd. Dr. Page emphasised that an improvement in quality and price would add immediately to the income of the Australian dairying- industry and also strengthen the overseas trade balance. He said he anticipated that when the export control arrangements were revised at the beginning of August the 'Commonwealth Government would •have difficulty in standing up to foreign 'competitors unless Australian supplies of export butter were considerably improved in the meantime. The official reason given for the poor average quality of Australian butter is the dirty and inefficient method of manufacture.
