INIQUITY OF TAXATION.

ROADS AND HOSPITALS. FARMERS’ 'UNION ADVOCACY. A series of remits dealing with the alleged iniquity of road and hospital fating opened up old issues at the conference of 'the Waikato Sub-Pro-vincial district of the Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon. The Te Awamutu and Cambridge branches, together with the provincial executive, .forwarded remits dealing with the rating system for roadlng purposes, advocating a derating principle by which the user would pay for the costs incurred.

“lOver a period of years it has been difficult to bring the local bodies into line with our derating policy,” said Mr J. ill. Furniss. “It is now polil . to follow their suggestions as outlined at llie recent conference in Hamilton. There is no need for us to quibble over minor points of expression when 'the principle that the user should pay is the same and is endorsed both by the local bodies and Hie union.’’ " We obtain unanimous support to a degree which we did not expect and it would now be a wise step to uphold Hie pronounced opinions of tho local bodies,” declared Mr S. N. Ziman. In place of Hie branch and executive remits it was decided lo endorse Hie resolutions carried by the mailing conference.

Following upon consideration of a Cambridge remit Hie conference expressed its opinion that hospital and charitable aid costs should not in any proportion be a direct, charge upon land, there being no relationship between these services and land values, II was considered that such expenditure should bo a charge upon the entire community. Further Gambridge suggestions that the existing levy on land be eliminated, (ConHuuta m column.;

and a national lax l>c instituted lo cover Hie amount so involved, failing which Hie entire hospital and charitable aid expenditure should l>e a charge against the Uonsolidated Fund, were lost.
