STRICKEN CEYLON

EPIDEMIC OF MALARIA. WORST FOR 20 YEARS. HIGH RATE OF MORTALITY. (Times Cable.) (Received Dec. 18, 2.30 p.m.) - ' LONDON, Dec. 17. x The Times’ Colombo correspondent says that half a million Cingalese are suffering from malaria, the scourge which is now gripping Ceylon. It is the worst epidemic for 20 years. There are many deaths daily and the hospitals are overcrowded. The patients are huddled in the corridors, . yet there is a continuous procession of bullock carts carrying collapsed men, women and children thither.

Even the small villages announce death rolls of from 30 to 75. The churches -and missionaries are making efTorts to relieve the sufferings, but the situation is too desperate for private effort. Also there is general reluctance to contribute to the relief fund, owing to the niggardliness of the State Council, in which there Is now a Cingalese majority, and has fixed the relief contribution at £7500.
