MATAMATA COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the ordinary meeting or the Matamata County Council, held at Tlrau, Cr. J. w. Anderson presided. The Department, or Agriculture wrote In rererence to the county taking control or noxious weeds, and it was decided to do so. ... Discussing the question ol the,appointment or an inspector, Cr. White stated that as,far as his observation went there was a marked improvement in the control or ragwort. Mr Freshney was appointed inspector. The Piako County Council wrote asking the council to favourably consider the rormlng or a tramc control group, consisting or Morrlnsvyie, Matamata and Te Aroha boroughs, and Putaruru Town' Board, as well as the two surrounding counties. The engineer suggested that the group be made, still larger by adding Rotorua and Taupo counties, and the clerk was instructed to conTer with those counties and report at the next meeting. Conversion of Loans. The Putaruru Town Board wrote that a committee, consisting or Messrs A. L. Mason and A. 11. Dukeson, had been appointed to conrer with a small committee or the council on the question or the conversion and consolidation' or the loan liability as it affects Putaruru. Crs. Cox, White and the clerk were appointed to meet th« Putaruru committee, with power to act. The Matamata Town Board wrote in connection with the Mangawhero deviation, advising that no objection would be raised to ‘the road going through Lot 2 on D.P. 18838 or Lot 7 off D.P. 16804 or Section 84, Block 11, provided that tho area of road to be closed be vested in the Town Board and £SO is paid to the Town Board. The clerk was Instructed to reply that the exchange should be equitable and no money provided, and that if Matamata is not satisfied with this it be settled by arbitration. Deputations. A deputation consisting of Messrs F. C. Hughes, chairman, and L. Rowbotham, secretary,, or the Thames Valley Drainage Board, waited on the Council regarding the extension of the board’s area. The control ol' the Waitoa watershed was under consideration, and his board considered it should have control of the whole watershed arid go on with a scheme or improving it. The council decided to raise no objection to the proposals provided the ratepayers interested are duly notilled.

Messrs P. Ilawkc, J. Cotter and Frank Hose attended on hehair or a large meeting of ratepayers held at Illnuera recently. Mr Hawke stated that at the Hinuera meeting the following resolution was carried: “That this meeting strongly objects to the abolition or riding boundaries and accounts being gone on with till the ratepayers.had considered the position .and given the opportunity to state their views on the question.”

Mr Cotter said It was not right to make any change until such time as there Is a rearrangement or the ridings, giving a nioro equitable representation to the ratepayers of the county. Mr F. Rose thought the action of the council was wrong, and he relt that tr a valuation basis were used there would be about nine members elected in the more populous districts as against three for the poorer ridings. Cr. White said that the deputation would get behind the movement that the user or the road should pay, and he suggested that the deputation could do good work if they pul their weight behind that movement. >

The resignation or the unemployment secretary at Matamata was received, and it was lert to the clerk and engineer to make suitable arrangements.

Tlie clerk was instructed to take steps to ascertain what could l>e done to increase representation on me council.
