SLOW BATTING

TOWN v. COUNTRY. GAME IN AUCKLAND. HAMILTON PLAYERS PROMINENT. (By Telegrapn.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. A feature of the first day’s play of the Town v. Country annual cricket match which was commenced at Eden Park yesterday, was the solid displays of the South Auckland players in the Country team. Captained by A. J. Aitken, the visitors won the toss and batted first on an easy wicket. The opening batsmen failed to make muoh impression and despite an attractive innings of 44 by the Auckland playercoach, L. F. Townsend, six wickets were down for 77 runs. The Derbyshire professional attempted to show that offensive methods were the best and his score included one six and six fours. He was caught on the long on boundary. It rested with the South Auckland players to recover the position and this they did slowly, but surely. Lissette and Clark first of all added 55 runs by patient batting and then Lissette and the High School boy, Harding, added 69 runs for The next wicket.

The scoring was very slow, but nevertheless, at the close of the innings a respectable total was compiled. Lissette was very unlucky in not reaching his century, but his innings was worth more than three figures to his side. Going in fourth wicket down, lie was undefeated at the end, his score comprising mostly singles. Town also started badly, Clark clean bowling Bush with a real good ball. At stumps Town had lost two wiokets for 52 runs. Details:— COUNTRY.'—First Innings.
