WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
MEETING AT WAHAROA. The monthly meeting of the Waharoa branch of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Patch, in 'the absence of the president through illness. The motto for the day was “A cheerful'smile is sauce for breakfast.”
Apologies were received from Mrs Gubis and Mrs Scott for unavoidable absence.
A report on the special group meeting at Matamata was read toy Mrs Fetch, who was appointed delegate to the bi-annual conference. Invitations were received tfrom Hinuera and Talhoa Institutes to their birthday parties. Two new links were chosen, Inverness and Dorsetshire, in addition to one in Canada, chosen at a previous meeting. An interesting roll-call was “An old treasure, and its history,” and Mrs C. Barker gave a demonstration on the making of various styles of buttonholes, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of .thanks. The 'competition for a Victorian posy resulted:—Mrs Petch 1, Mrs Gunn 2, Mrs Ilughes '3, and the results of the table centre competition were: —Mrs Keaney 1, Mrs Petch 2, and Mrs Hughes 3. The judges were Mrs Barlow and Miss Gandy. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Newsome, Bryce, Lazentoy and Williams.
The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
KOMAKORAU BRANCH. - At the monthly meeting of the Komakorau Women’s Institute the president, Mrs A. J. Smith, presided over a good attendance of members. The Institute creed was sung and Mrs Smith was appointed delegate to the bi-annual conference of 'the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes at Hamilton. Remits were also discussed for the conference. Mrs Waring, of the Taupiri Women's Institute, gave an interesting demonstration of the making of lamp-shades, beautifully finished articles being shown. Mrs Shepherd, of the same Institute, demonstrated 'the making of puff pastry. They were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The roll-call, “What husbands think of the Institute” was well responded to, and Mrs Paterson, of Hie Ilorotiu Women’s Institute, gave an interesting reading on “Dental clinic work.” A competition, “ Thi best sponge cake,” judged by 'the visitors, was won by Mrs J. Carbines, with Mrs S. J. Stanley second, and Mrs B. Mills third.
Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Rumney, Arbuckle, W. 'Hall and Miss T. Bell. Community singing brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
BRANCH FORMED AT MELVILLE. A visit was paid to Melville by the organisers, Mrs Robson, president of the Waikato Federation, and Mrs Marx, the treasurer. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Bev. Burrows, Mr? W. Allen extended a welcome to the visitors on toehalf of the district. An interesting resume of the alms and activities of the Institute was given by Mrs Robson, and also a demonstration' of paper pochette making.
‘it was decided to form a branch of the Institute, the 'first meeting to bo held on Wednesday, November 7, at 2 p.m. at Mrs iKiepplc’s home in Tawa Street.
The following oflieers were elected: President (pro tern), .Mrs W. Allen; secretary, Mrs .1. 'Glougher; treasurer, Mrs Chaiucy; committee, Mesdames A. Duff, Buck land, Brisk, Coggins, Price, Walson and Miss Nila Price. •It was decided to'invite a parly from Fairfield to assist with flic programme at flic initial meeting. A delightful afternoon tea was served.
