MISERABLE SQUALOR.
IN CITY OF DUNDEE. WORST SLUMS IN BRITAIN. There may have been a time when the Scottish city of jute and marmalade deserved the title of “Bonnie Dundee,” but an investigation shows that it must have been many years ago, says a London paper. To-day Dundee contains some of the worst slums in Britain. The records of the city health department bristle with cases of abominable overcrowding, and in hundreds of homes segregation of the sexes is practically unknown.
Throughout the city there is a desperate desire for better houses, but only the feeblest efforts have been made to deal with the immense and vital problem of housing.
Five thousand new houses are urgently needed. It has been decided to build only 2500. In Ihe meantime, thousands of citizens, unable to help themselves, must live indefinitely in miserable squalor.
