MR MELLON ACCUSED.
ALLEGED TAX EVASION. DEPARTMENT FILES A BRIEF. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. In spite of the refusal of a Pennsylvanian Grand Jury to indict Mr. Andrew Mellon, formerly Secretary of the Treasury, on a charge of tax evasion, the Department of Internal Revenue to-day filed a brief with the Board of Tax Appeals accusing Mr, Mellon of “scheming to evade taxes’’ aggregating 3,075,000 dollars while he was in office. The allegation is that Mr. Mellon illegally reduced his taxable income by "fictitious securities sales and other devices.’’ Mr. Mellon immediately denied the validity of the brief and reiterated his charge that he is being subjected to political by the present Administration. A grand jury last May refused to indict Mr. Mellon on a charge of evasion of taxes. Mr Mellon subsequently averred that he actually overpaid his dues and would seek a refund.
