MILITANT MINERS

A SETTLEMENT. PARIS, Aug. 8. The strike of Polish miners at Escarpclie ended this evening after having been in progress a day and a-half. Twenty of the French miners escaped to tlie pithead by means of the precarious emergency ladders, but tlie Poles said they were prepared to starve themselves and tlie other French hostages and to paralyse tlie mine until tlie dismissed Communists were reinstated.

Later tiie colliery managers sent tlie foreman and four assistants to parley with tlie Poles, but a note was sent up to tlie surface saying that tlie envoys also were held as hostages. A strong force of police was called up, and finally tlie management settled Hie dispute and tlie whole of tlie men below came to tiie surface.
