Referring to the Newfoundland proposals as outlined by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the House of Commons, Mr W. Lunn (Labour—Rothwell), said his party opposed the resolution. It did not object to assisting people who were prepared to help themselves, but it objected to the British taxpayer being called upon to make good a bankruptcy that was due to wrong-doing. The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mr L. Hore-Belisha, in replying, emphasised the huge reductions in salaries and in grants for education and pensions the Newfoundland people had accepted in an endeavour to right the situation. These would result in Intense hardship and privation.

The resolution was carried by 227 votes to 38,
