THE GRAND NATIONAL. NOTES ON TRAINING. j T GALLOPS AT RICCARTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The weather was fine for training at Riccarton this morning. The outside of the trial grass track was in good order, though a trifle dead. Work consisted chiefly of short sprints, a large number of horses being restricted to half-miles. Water Power covered the halfmile in 49'4-ss, Chrysology in 50s, Cricket Bat in 50 3-5 s and Sitvox in 51 2-5. Imitator and High 4 Rank got over the distance in 51 l-ss, while Martian Chief and Top Rank took 52 2-ss. Drumfire did his task along the baok in 49 4-ss. Beacon Fire covered five furlongs in 1.6, Epigram and Normandy taking 1.19 2-5 for six furlongs. Water Polo and Haere Tonu were sent over half-a-mile which took 51 2-ss, Chief Light and Strong Light doing a similar distance in 50 2-ss. Smart Five Furlong*. Foreign Queen clipped off a smart five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, the last halfmile taking 50s. Takakua was sent over six fuolongs which took 1.19 2-5. Croupier easily heat Cylinder over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5. Charmeuse narrowly beat Southdown in a gallop over half-a-mile which took 50 3-ss. Luna Lux and Henry of Navarre were associated over half-a-mile, which took 54 l-ss. Fiat Lux and Bright Red covered half-a-mile in 49 4-5 s and Bay Tree and Cyclonic ran five furlongs from the stand in 1.5 3-5, the last half-mile taking 51 3 - 5 s. V Dorian and Manetho ran half-a-mile in 50 2-ss, Rational 11., Hounslow and Marquillo doing a similar distance in 52 4-ss. • St. Joan covered five furlongs easily in 1.7. Silver Ring was sent over half-a-mile, which took 51s. Polydora- beat Cottesmore over five furlongs in 1 1.5 2-5, the last half-mile taking 525. Jaloux and Davolo were companions over half-a-mile which took 555, and Marm oration ■ covered the same distance in 52 4-ss. On No. 7, a short track, Shatter and Nightly ran five furlongs in 1.2 l-ss, Dracula taking 1.3 1-5, for the distance. Work of the Jumpers. Adventus jumped four hurdles well. Polling • Day went well over four hurdles, Tea Urn accompanying him over the first two. v Don Jose and Joie De Val jumped four hurdles, both shaping well. Lady Rene went over two hurdles. Night Parade started with her but fell at the first flight. Later he went over four safely. Tent Call'gave a fair display over four hurdles.

A large number of horses performed useful pace work on the sand. Make Up was sore when doing only walking evercise, and this stable mate Landmark has not worked for several days. It is understoood Landmark will not start at the meeting.
