WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

OHAUPO BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Ohaupo branch of the Women’s Institute took place on Wednesday, July 26, and took file ' form of a social afternoon. The programme was as follows: —• Women's Institute song, comrades and friends; recitation, Miss Elza Tltmarsh; competition, won by Miss Ethel Trott; short welcome to visitors by Mrs Fletcher (president) ; folk dancing by members of Kaipaki Women's Institute; community singing, led by Rev. Haslam; song, Mrs Mason (Hamilton); violin solo, Rev. Haslam (Hamilton) ; pianoforte solo, Mr Jensen (Hamilton) ; elocution, Mrs Linder (Hamilton) ; song, Rev. Haslam; elocution, Miss J. Sage. Mrs Treloar brought and displayed a wonderful and most interesting collection of pictures. At the conclusion of the programme Mrs Fletcher expressed the keen appreciation of the local. Institute members to Mrs Treloar,-. for bringing all the Hamilton artists, who entertained so splendidly, and to the young ladies from Kaipaki who rendered folk dances.

Afternoon tea and “The Kirs" brought a happy afternoon to a close.

AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI, The monthly meeting of the Nawton- Rotokaurl Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, July 26, in Nawton Hall. Mrs Barrett presided over a good attendance of members and friends. Three new members were welcomed.

The meeting opened by reading the creed. A motion of sympathy ' to Mrs Trownsbn was passed, the members standing in silence. The roll call “sewing hints,” was well responded to and some useful hints passed on to the members.

The competitions were best decorated coat hanger and a plate of rock cakes made with one egg. Mrs Crawshaw 1 and Mrs Muir 2, winning the points for rock cakes, and Mrs Mullins 1 and Mrs Crawshaw 2, the coat hanger. A written competition was won by Mrs Collins., A very interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Mullins “Dargeana painting.” Mrs Collins, of the Women’s Division, spoke about the Douglas Credit and also read some newspaper cuttings on the .subject. The next meeting is to take the form of a/ social and dance, and to be held on Thursday evening, August 31, that day being the first anniversary of our Women’s Institute. The hostesses were Mesdames Terry, White, Ward and Kernot. Community singing was then indulged in and Mrs Carter sang a solo, the members joining in the chorus. The meeting closed by singing the Women’s Institute song, “A Goodly Thing It is to Meet." SOCIAL AT WHITEHALL. There was a good attendance, including visitors from Taotaoroa and Karapiro, at a social given In Whitehall School, nn Friday evening, by the Whitehall Women’s Institute.
