OBITUARY.
MR HUGH ROSS. One of the earliest settlers In the Te Aroha district, in the person of Mr Hugh Ross, of Waihou, passed away on Saturday afternoon,, after a brier illness, at the age of ih years. He was born at Elgin, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1878, when 20 years of age. He was one of the first to take up land at Waihou, and after improving his-property for farming purposes, selected a portion for a nursery, from which in later years many thousands of trees and shrubs were sold for the orchards and shelter belts of the Thames Valley district. Deceased was one ,of the first members of the Waihou School Committee, and was greatly esteemed and respected by those who knew him. His funeral was largely attended.
MR JAMES W. PRESCOTT. OTOROHANGA, Tuesday. The death occurred at the Waikato Hospital of Mr James Wlnstanley Prescott, of Otorohanga, In his 64th year. The interment took place at the Hartiilton East Cemetery, and was attended by relatives and friends from this district. MRS E. J. CHURCHES. PUKEKOHE, Monday. ** The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs Elizabeth Jane Churches, aged 74 years.
Mrs Churches who was the widow of the late Mr Frederick Churches, was born at Pakuranga. After their marriage, Mr and Mrs Churches lived in the Waikato, where Mr Churches farmed several properties. Mrs Churches is survived by two sons, Messrs F. Churches, of Lichfield, and A. Churches, of Whakapara, and five daughters, Mesdames 11. Salmon, of Whangarei, W. King, of Frankton, G. Ellice, of Newstead, and W. Harris, of Pukekohe, and Miss 11. Churches, of Pukekohe. MR A. G. HILL. WELLINGTON, Monday. Mr A. G. Hill, middle-aged, a member of the firm of Hill and Plummer, of Auckland, collapsed on ’Customhouse Quay this morning and died almost immediately. MR JOHN D. RITCHIE. WELLINGTON, Monday. The death is announced of Mr John Douglas Ritchie, ex-Controller of Land Purchases. ADMIRAL SIR W. PAKENHAM. LONDON, July 31. The death has occurred of Admiral Sir William Christopher Pakenham, aged 72 years. He joined the Navy as a hoy of 13 and when 24 was appointed lieutenant-. In 1922 lie was raised to the rank of Admiral. During the war he commanded the third cruiser squadron until 1917 and was then placed in command of the battle cruiser fleet, subsequently being appointed Commander-in-Ghief of the North American and West Indian Station, a position lie held until 1922. He retired in 1922. He was present at the Battle of Jutland, in 1916, being next in command to Admiral Beatty of the battle cruiser fleet, his flag being flown from H.M.S. New Zealand.
