The Times, in a leading article, states that the return of the Davis Gup to England seemed problematic a fortnight ago, but Austin and Perry showed extraordinary fighting qualities and proved as good as any players in the world. The British triumph .was largely due to the' unfailing confidence and wise counsel of the nonplaying captain, whose usefulness had been questioned by many. France’? loss was due to the dack of fresh players. PARIS, July 31. The Davis Cup has been lost, 'but honour has been saved, summarises the feeling in France, where the departure of . the-cup is regarded as a national event. Lacoste, speaking at the French Tennis Federation’s dinner, warped England that the “Three Musketeers," united in defeat as in victory, intended to strive to regain the cup. Borotra said there were no better sportsmen and no other country to whom France would rather have lost. LATER. VICTORIOUS PLAVERS RETURN. A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME.
