COMMUNITY SINGING.
ANOTHER BIG GATHERING. INCREASING ATTENDANCE. Another successful community “sing" was held in the Theatre Royal to-day over five hundred people assembling for an hour of vocal recreation and joviality. Practically every seat in the downstairs portion of the theatre was occupied, and everyone joined in the singing of popular choruses, which were led by the Rev. R. J. Boyt, with Mrs F. Ke.ar at the piano. During an interval Mr E. H. Quill sang an amusing parody on the wellknown song, “John Peel.” v ’The proceedings were again broadcast by Mr G. S. Anchor through Station IZH, and a number of reports from listeners indicated that reception throughout the district was good.
It was announced that next Tuesday the "sing" will be conducted by members of the Waikato Entertainers’ Club.
On August 22, Mr Albert Russell, the well-known Auckland song leader, will visit Hamilton to officiate in a similar capacity here.
APPRECIATION FROM AFAR. HEARD OVER THE AIR. That the cheer germ bred by community singing does not stop at the people congregated in the theatre has been proved by the numerous letters received from people who have listened to the rollicking choruses “ over the air.” The happiness spreads in an ever-widening circle. Among the most appreciative listeners are the patients in the hospitals and settlers on isolated farms.
Here Is a sample of a letter, addressed to “ Community Song Leader,” received at IZH, Hamilton, from Matangl: “ Sir, —We enjoy the community singing from Hamilton every Tuesday. Can you sing “ Just an Echo in the Valley ” for us We enclose a shilling. We are only cow cookies and the mortgage is due next week! Cheerio, and best wishes. —“Cocky.”
