GOLD FOR NOTES.
CONFIDENCE MEN’S HAUL. £l5O HANDED TO BOGUS OFFICIALS' (From a Correspondent.) v MELBOURNE, July 18. Handing £l5O to two confidence men who said they could exchange the money for gold, Dr. F- L. Kochlar, of British New Guinea, who is visiting Australia, has since seen neither the money nor the men. Dr. Kochlar told the police that after drawing the money from the bank, he read the promise to pay in gold on the notes, and proceeding to the Treasury, he asked for the gold. The officials sent him to other departments and he-interviewed a number of officials before he was referred to the Public Works Department. As he was entering the building, two men, who said they were the chief accountant and the assistant-secre-tary to the Treasury respectively, accosted him and told him that he could secure £IOO in gold and £SO in English notes. Kochlar handed over the money and the men walked away in different directions, lie chased, one but jjotUcl not calc lb ijiiU.
