OTTAWA AGREEMENT.
BENEFITS TO DOMINION.
RECOGNITION OF BRITAIN’S SIDE.
ADJUSTING OF TARIFFS.
(Special to Times). WELLINGTON, Monday,
It now becomes necessary for New Zealand to recognise the benefits conferred upon her by the Ottawa Agreement, and to see that the purchase of British goods is supported in every way possible, states the annual report of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board.
A consideration of the course of meat prices over recent years has made it more than ever manifest that the prosperity of our meat-producers is very largely dependent on the economic conditions at Home and prosperity in Britain’s great manufacturing industries. / The board feels strongly that New Zealand’s policy, briefly stated, should be, firstly, to see that our tariffs on imports from Great Britain are edjusted to meet the terms of the Ottawa Agreement, and do it in such a way that Britain will be satisfied that New Zealand has carried out the agreement in a thoroughly liberal and fair manner; secondly, having done the foregoing, our aim should be to ultimately give British manufacturers the same free entry into New Zealand that all our New Zealand exports enjoy when entering the Mother Country.
