NEW STATES

PROPOSAL IN AUSTRALIA. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. Speaking as a private citizen, and not necessarily as Minister for Defence, or on behalf of a Government or a party, Sir George Pearce, before leaving for Perth, said that the proposal to make two new Slates in North and North-Western Australia was naturally associated with the Government proposal to develop the North, says a Melbourne paper.

“That area has a good annual rainfall. There is an abundance of subterranean water, and there are many good streams along the coastal belt,” he said. “There Is rich land there, and all kinds of mineral deposits that have yet to be discovered. "OiTF plan is to get the area developed first as Commonwealth territory, which will have the advantage of single taxes and low tariffs.

“The sooner that area is developed the better. “When it has a population of 50,000 it should he ready to be formed into one or two new Slates that would give the Commonwealth good balance politically and otherwise. “Jt may not occur for 10 or even 20 years, but it, definitely is associated with, the development of the northwest.’’
