HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER
WORK IN THE SOUTH. INSPECTED BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WAIMATE, Monday. Hon. J. Bitchener Inspected the hydro-electri-o works to-day, accompanied by Mr Burnett, M.P., and the Chief Engineer of Public Works (Mr McKenzie). He was conducted over the works by the engineer, Mr R. H. Paokwood. Mr Bitchener remarked: “It is a hive of industry. They are working all night, working well.” The chief work at present is excavation for the stage -coffer dam. Rock has been reached in places, and concreting Is expected to begin in -three -or four weeks. The engineer -hopes to be above the flood level by December, when the work can be proceeded with without flood fears. Air Packwood remarked that they bad been very fortunate with the weather. He also -stated that illness with the men was not so prevalent this winter.
Mr Bitchener will return this afternoon, and will go to Christchurch tomorrow'.
