THE WAIHI ACCIDENT.
THANKSGIVING SERVICES. GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S SYMPATHY. WAIHI, Sunday. Hundreds of townspeople gathered at the Waihi Hospital grounds this afternoon to give thanks for the remarkable escape from death of the 12 miners wlio were involved in the accident at the Waihi mine on Wednesday, when a cage broke avyay jand fell hundreds of feet before coming to rest-about 1450 ft. from the surface. The men concerned, many' of whom bore ’evidence of 'their injuries, took part in ceremony from the verandah of the hospital.
The Mayor, Mr. W. M. ( Walnutt, in opening the service, read a message he had received from the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, as follows: — 11 Please convey to all those injured in the serious accident in the Waihi mine shaft the deep sympathy of Lady Btedtsloe and myself, our warm congratulations on their escape from death, and our earnest 'hopes for their speedy recovery.” Mr. Walnutt said he had been informed- by the mine management that a full inquiry into the cause of the accident would be held and that the brakes in No. 2 shaft, where the mishap occurred, would Be tested at the earliest possible opportunity. Special services were held in the Waihi churches to-day.
The medical superintendent of the Waihi Hospital stated this evening that all the injured men were progressing favourably.
