WHATAWHATA BRANCH.
MATANOI BRANCH. Mrs Whewell presided over a large gathering of members and visitors at the July meeting, held on Thursday afternoon. The meeting, was opened with tji% reading of the “Women’s Aspiratioft.'' A vote of sympathy with .Mrs Trownson was passed, the members standing in silence. A: A telegram wishing the meeting success was received v from Mrs Trownson, who is in Christchurch. The roll-call, “ What Our Husbands Think of the Institute," brought forth some entertaining answers, which were received in sealed envelopes. General regret was expressed at the inability* of Madame Burtyl to attend the meeting. Community singing was Indulged in, Mrs Burnett presiding at the piano. A competition was won by Mrs T. G. Hinton, Mrs McMillan and Miss Smith. A plain sponge competition resulted in Mrs Walnwright gaining first prize and Mrs T. Shaw second. Mr Cargill was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for aotlng as Judge. A welcome was extended to the members of the Eureka Institute who were present, Mrs Hinton suitably responding. The trading table was in charge .of Mrs Tomlinson and Mrs Hodgson. The Institute Birthday Party Is to be held on the evening of the fourth Thursday in August. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. Jamieson, Martini, Nielson and Miss E. Nielsen.
The monthly meeting of the Whatawhata Women’s, Institute was held In the local hall on Friday, July 21. Mrs Soper presided. The president very feelingly made reference to Mrs Russell’s* and Mrs Trownson’s sad losses, and as a mark of sympathy members stood for a minute's silence. The roll-call, “A , First-aid Hint ’’ was well responded to, and a word competition was won by Mrs F. Magner.
Miss E. Mi Rothwell very kindTy demonstrated the cutting ftnd fitting of a dress, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Some beautiful specimens of bead, wool and leather work were exhibited by the same lady, and members are looking forward to demonstrations on these in the near future. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Calder, Mrs Sperry, Mrs McGibbons and Mrs Anderson.
The programme for August is as follows: Roll-call, “My Favourite Author and Why?; competition, “ Best worked buttonhole and sample of darning”; demonstration, coloured pictures, brooches and soft toys by members of the TaupirJ W.I.
