INCREASED WAGES SUGGESTED
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Will you allow me space in which to point out how the Government could benefit to the extent of £BOO,OOO annually, without imposing further taxation? This can be done by increasing everybody’s wages by 20 per cent. At present we pay £70,000 weekly to the Government in wages tax; another 20 per cent would be £14,000 a week —in other words, £728,000 a year. I anticipate also that the revenue from sales tax would Increase by fully one-fifth (£30,000); revenue for beer tax by 10 per cent (>£60,000); revenue from sundry other taxes (£22,000). These amounts total £840,000. Deduot £40,000 in order to allow for any unexpected decline. The public, too, would benefit enormously. The effect on business would be apparent within a week. Hoping some abler pen than mine will support me on this subject.—l am, eto., A. J. LILLEY. Hamilton, June 29, 1933.
