AMERICAN LANGUAGE.
GRAFTED TO ENGLISH FILMS. AN INCONGRUOUS COMBINATION, BRITISH PRODUCERS PROTEST. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright, (Received May 15, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 14. A report that American accents will be “ grafted ” on British actors’ and actresses’ voices in talking films to make them acceptable in the American Middle West has aroused the opposition of British producers.
The first picture scheduled for this treatment, “ The Faithful Heart,” was made in London and stars Mr Herbert Marshall and Miss Edna Best. The producers of the picture are endeavouring to prevent the mutilation. It Is pointed out that British audiences for five years endured harsh American voices, but the American accent on a British setting would be comical.
