RESPONSE TO APPEAL
RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. The editor of the Waikato Times acknowledges the receipt of £1 Is, accompanied by the following letter: “1 was pleased to see the appeal in the Waikato Times to oitlzens to assist in the provision of work for the unemployed during the winter, and I hope property-owners and residents generally will act upon the excellent suggestions made. “Those who are not able to And jobs oould, no doubt, assist' a local organisation, say, the Beautifying Society or the Domain Board, to provide additional work. Thus they would be adding to the town's attractiveness and providing deserving men with labour. “The time has come when we must consider our spending and divert our money into channels which will assist the needy rathe;’ than minister to our personal comforts. This is a duty which we must recognise and carry out. It may mean self-denial and sacrifice, but I have somewhere read:
“ 'Whoso hath this world’s good and sooth his brother havo need and shuttoth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God In him?’
"I enclose £1 Is In response to your appeal. This will be followed by a similar amount monthly for the next four months. I would like it devoted to the provision of work, but if this is not feasible then it can be handed on to the Social Welfare League."
