THE SMOOTH STONE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —“J.R’s." smooth stone has not ■reached the mark. He quotes Eccl. 12: 7.. “The dust returneth to the •earth as it was, and the spirit ‘returneth unto God who gave it”- —to prove the immortality of the soul. The term “immortal soul” is not used. If “J.R." will take a Young’s Concordance and look up 'the word “spirit” he will -find that it is the same Hebrew word (ruach) which is translated "breath” in Eccl. 3: 19. The passage is as follows: “For that which befalleth the sons of man befallet'h beasts; even one thing befalleth them; as one dieth so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath (ruaoh). . . All go to -one plac,e; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.” The word “spirit" of the next verse (20) is also from “ruach." A -similar use is found in Psalm 146: 4 : “His breath ('ruach) goeth forth, he returneth to his earth. In that very day his thoughts perish.” When man ceases to breathe he dies, and remains dead until the resurrection. —I am, etc., JOSIAH SALISBURY. Claudelands, April 21, 1933.
