What Might Have Been. —Replying to the toast of - “Past and Present Committees" at the Macandrew Road School jubilee banquet on Saturday nigbt, Mr A. T. Smith assured those present that the work of the school committee was not all “cakes and ale,” and as proof of tills statement he referred to an Incident that had occurred some years ago while lie was a member of the Macandrew Road School Committee. At a meeting of ■householders, ho said, a great amount of I rouble bad been given by a certain individual whose interruptions became so frequent Unit he had to he ejected from the hall. He had evidently not taken this action in the best spirit, liecause a day or two later letters were received from him by the members of 'the committee, stating that in his opinion they should alt be slaughtered in cold blood. Although some of the members were inclined to treat the whole tiling as a huge joke, others regarded it more seriously, and referred the matter to the police. The police sergeant accordingly visited the man, and" found in his pocket a six-chamber-ed revolver, fully loaded. “So you see,” Mr Smith concluded amid laughter, “wluit might have happened to that school committee.” —Otago Daily Times.
