RAVAGES OF CATERPILLAR. EXTENSIVE FORESTS THREATENED (By Telegraph.—press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. Dr. Holloway, lecturer in botany at Otago University, says the extensive forests of New Zealand mountain beech in the Wakatipu district are threatened with destruction througii the ravages of a species of caterpillar. In the past two years large areas have been destroyed. The caterpillar first denudes the tree of its green foliaget The branches die back, and finally the tree dies. Specimens of the caterpillar have been sent to the Cawthron Institute.
