TELL-TALE LETTERS.
THREE THEFTS ADMITTED. BASE INGRATITUDE SHOWN. Two letters In his possession removed from a stolen handbag were found difficult 'to explain away by Lionel George Hood (36), who pleaded guiltv to three charges of theft before Mr. F. W. Platts,' S.M., In the Magistrate’s Court,,Hamilton, yesterday morning. Hood was charged with stealing a woman's handbag and contents, valued at £1 4s 3d, the property of Alice Graham; a canvas curtain valued at 15s, the property of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company; and a bicycle valued at £B, the property of William Arthur Carter. Senior-Sergeant J. J. Power told the Court that Hood, a single man, who was discharged from gaol in February; arrived in Hamilton on Wednesday and spent most of the day drinking. In the evening he went to Dr. A. G. .Waddell’s house and asked for money. He said he had had nothing to eat, and he whs given a‘meal. He removed the bag when leaving.
“When the accused was accosted in the street by Constable G. F. McKenzie he denied that he had stolen the handbag but two letters which •had been In the bag were discovered in his possession," added the seniorsergeant. “ Subsequently the bag was found hidden with the bicycle and a tarpaulin in some grass In London Street. He then admitted the thefts. This man lias a formidable list. Your * Worship. Drink has a good deal to do with his downfall.” Constable G. E. Callaghan read a statement In which the accused said he removed the bicycle and tarpaulin from outside the Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Auctioneering Company’s premises, hiding them In a paddock in London Street. He had acted on sudden impulse after having a few drinks. He admitted all the thefts.
The accused was sentenced to three months’ Imprisonment for stealing the bicycle and was convicted and discharged on the other charges.
