PITIABLE CASE

WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. TOOK GAS TO SAVE CHILD. (From a Correspondent). SYDNEY, March 14. Steps are being taken to secure the release from gaol of a woman who was convicted for having stolen Id worth of gas to save the life of a child. The gas company is co-operating with the Mayor of Canterbury, who convened a public meeting last night. The Mayor (Aid. Parry) said that the woman would be freed if he had to personally pay her fine. It was stated that the doctor had ordered the child treatment. It was necessary to obtain hot water, and the only means of obtaining such was by connecting a pipe to the gas main. This the woman did, and was fined £3 and 18s costs, or eight days. She had no money to pay the fine and went to gaol. Later, arrangements were made for the woman's release.
