TOTALISATOR RECORDS INCREASE

The February meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club was opened in fine weather at Epsom on Saturday. A sharp shower fell early in the afternoon. but when the rain passed over the day continued fine for the remainder of the programme. The new win and place betting system was introduced for the first time at a trotting fixture and was attended with gratifying success—a substantial increase in investments being recorded over the corresponding day last season. The programme opened with the Trial Handicap in which all with the exception of Win ltuon fulfilled their engagements. Nicoya, the second fancy, scored in convincing fashion from Otara, with Mattie Ilerbilwyn the nearest of the others. Autumn Lu was fourth. Otara was at a double figure return on the place machine. With Regina Derby the only defection from the Waihelce Handicap sixteen came out to contest the mile and a quarter event, for which May Chenault was prime fancy with the win section of investors, and Raider first choice with the other division. Edna Worthy won to return her following over a score for a win. The Tamahere trained Te Mahanga was second and Gold Seam third. Raider was fourth. They all went into the starter s hands in the two mile event, the Otahuhu Handicap, which resulted in a narrow' victory for Kewpie’s Guv over the fourth place fancy, First Flight. Auto Machine was third and Pageant, who was coupled with the winner, fourth. Dad’s Hope annexed the Papakura Handicap from Modern Light, with Lady Coronado a head away, a similar distance in front of the fourth horse, Nelson’s Chum, who had led practically throughout. The winner’s return was over a score. The withdrawal of Cleo and Eleawah left only five to contest the Mt. Albert Handicap. The favourite, Mazda, was always handy and finishing strongly she took the measure of Prince Etawah by a length. Francis Lincoln was close up ahead of Wee Machine. Dark McKinney declined his engagement for the February Handicap, which was to the credit of the favourite Nicoya, who beat Explosion by a comfortable margin. Zanzibar was third and Bessie Parrish fourth. Ten of the fifteen carded for the Moss Davis Memorial paraded for this event, Silver d’Oro vindicating her earlier showing by scoring by a comfortable margin from Ravdus, who beat Brentlight by a length. Great Parrish was finishing fast in fourth berth. Nine came out for the concluding „ event the Railway Handicap, in which the Hamilton owned '•ml trained Pukemiro scored over Siive" Bingen in a close finish. Great Fame was only a head away in front of Realty. CONCLUDING EVENTS.

Nicoya was the elect of investors in boll] divisions with £l6l 10s and £34 1 10s. 'Phe second fancied Bessie Parrish carried £2 19 and £338 respectively, while Explosion, the sixth choice, hail £163 on his chances for t] win and £54 the other way. Zanzibar carried £75 and £l7B. The favourite, Great Parrish, was most in demand in both divisions with £297 on each machine, while the Carnui —Pageant bracket was second in request with £214 10s for a win and £286 for a place. The winner, Silver d’Oro, was third favourite with £ ISB and £269 respectively, while Raydus was seventh fancy, carrying £3B from the win investors and £l3O for a place.

When they settled down Raydus was in front with Silver d’Oro, Kelp and Pageant all handy. Raydus and Silver d’Oro were together throughout the race, and going along the back for the last time were attended by Kelp and Brentlight, The order was unchanged as they entered the straight, and in a good finish Silver d’Oro went out ahead to pass the judge a length and a quarter in front of Ravdus, who finished a length ahead of 'Brentlight.. Great Parrish was fourth, with Pageant, Kelp, and Kewpie’s Triumph the closest of the others. Times: 2.48 3-5, 2.49 1-5, 2.48 4-5, 2.49 1-5.

Silver Bingen was favourite on the win machine and second choice for a place. Realty and Whippet being the next in order of selection. Whippet and Homeward did not have the best, of the despatch, Great Fame being the first to become prominent from Rey de Quest, Pukemlro and Silver Bingen. Great Fame was a couple of lengths clear as they passed the stands, with Pukemiro showing the way lo Silver Bingen, Really, Bey de Quest and Homeward. They raced along the back without alteration, Grea£ Fame being just clear of Pukemiro, with Silver Bingen and Realty in close attendance. Great Fame tired over the concluding stages and In a great finish Pukemiro took the verdict by a neck .from .Silver Bingen, who' beat "Great' PaniS by a head. Realty was fourth and Rey de Quest next. Times: 2.51, 2.53 .1-5, 2.52, 2.50 2-5.

TOTALISATOR INCREASE. NEW SYSTEM POPULAR. INITIAL TROTTING TRIAL. The popularity of the win .and place system of investment, which was having its initial trial at a - trotting gathering, was a feature of- the meeting. Only in one race were less than three dividends distributed. Some excellent dividends were recorded on both win and place machines.

During.the day £20,135 was invested, compared with £14,022 10s on opening day last season —an increase of £6112 10s. Details of the betting on the two machines are as follows: —

At the request of the Racing Conference the Trotting Conference has decided to fail into line with the now regulations formulated by t lie Racing Conference with regard to the payment of dividends on placed horses. ’Phis means that, trotting clubs will also work under clause 4 of the RrtcConferencc regulations,. which ' provides that when there, are live, six or seven such starters the amount of the “ place ” pool must be divided into two equal parts to be distributed amongst investors on the first and second horses.
