OTAGO’S EXPORT FRUIT.
MARKETING PROBLEMS. AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION. Otago will probably export 100,000 cases of fruit to England and the Continent this season, the orchards having made a wonderful recovery from last year’s devastating blizzard and frosts, according to a statement made by Mr Harry Turner, London representative of tlio New Zealand Fruit Marketing Board, before he left on his return to England. "I do not consider that the economic position in the Old Country has greatly improved so far, but a pleasing feature is Hie general feeling of oplimism and I lie general confidence that things are coming right, allhough there is nothing dcllnite at Hie moment," stated Mr Turner. The opinion was lirmiy held, lie said, that no substantial improvement in Hie position could lie expected while two major nations like Germany and Hie United Slates were in their present condition.
-We arc hopeful I ha I laril'f adjustment as a result ot Ottawa and the, adverse exchange against, the l idled Slates will have the- effect of cheeking |lie carry over of American apples, which previously have seriously afI'orled our earlier, shipments,” he said. “‘Production in regard to the Continent, is very obscure owing to the political situation, and as Australia is there as well as England—our greatest com-
petitor—the difference in 'the exchange rate is a most serious handicap to New Zealand. It practically gives Australia a margin of 18d a case with which to fight us. "Scandinavia is a potential market, but it is also affected by the exchange rate."
