SERVICE IN CHINA.

RECRUITING IN NEW ZEALAND. MINISTER DENIES RUMOUR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Reports have been current in Wellington during the past few weeks that a man reputed to be a British officer lias been recruiting men qualified in machine gunnery for service in China. The rumour was that those who were being induced to offer their services in China were being guaranteed their expenses and keep. A complete denial of the rumour was given to-day by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe. The Minister also denied that military stores had been sold to Japan. “ No equipment or stores of any description,” lie said, “ have been ‘sold officially or otherwise to Japan. The only sales made of surplus Defence stores have been to reputable Now Zealand firms with whom the department lias been dealing for years."
