The Russian exile, Leo Trotsky, who xvas permitted to leave Czechoslovakia for the purpose of lecturing in Scandinavia, broadcast a speech io the United States this evening. He is to receive £3OO plus £15,555 for “ talkie ” film rights. Trotsky’s subject xvas “ The Meaning of the Russian Revolution.” He claimed that as the result of a decade of Soviet rule the productivity of Russia had increased 400 per cent., whereas it had decreased elsewhere. The Danish wireless authorities refused to broadcast the speech so Trotsky had It telephoned to Rugby and thence transmitted by submarine telephone to New York. Trotsky’s unfamiliarity with the English language handicapped his effort. Every precaution was taken by the Danish police to ensure Trotsky’s safety and there were no disturbances. He will visit Sweden and lecture there. LONDON, Nov. 23. Hundreds of people collected at the quay at Esbjerg, says the Copenhagen correspondent of the Times, and greeted Trotsky with booing and catcalling. Trotsky apparently was resentful, but he sat in a railway carriage within earshot of the crowd dictating a statement to his secretary, in which he expressed “ joy at revisiting your hospitable country,” which was handed to journalists. When Trotsky arrived in Marseilles en route to Scandinavia he was in a state of terror. The crew of the ship, the Praga, reported that he had spent the whole trip, from the Island of Prinklpo, In the Sea of Marmora, in his cabin. He slept with a revolver under his pillow, and went daily in fear of assassination. The French police, says the Marseilles correspondent of tho Daily Mail, feared Communist demonstrations when the ship arrived, and sent a launch, xvhich met the ship outside Marseilles, and landed Trotsky at an isolated cove, from where he was motored to Lyons to board the train for Dunkirk.
