INVERNESS CASTLE. —Unlike most. castles,, that at Inverness is of more or less modern constructon. It was built in 1835 on the site of the older fortress erected by Cromwell and destroyed by Jacobites in 1746, only 1 portion of the original ramparts being left. Recently a considerable amount of damage was done by a portion of a retaining wall collapsing, followed by landslides which buried a mission hall belonging to Inverness Old High Church, hut without loss of life.
