UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

(TO the Editor.) Sir, —Far be it from me to minimise the seriousness of the unemployment problem; it is almost desperate; and it is refreshing to note that the eoolesiastlcal bodies are concerned and anxious to assist in finding a solution. It is a grave national question, and it has to be faced, bravely and on a broad basis. Unfortunately there are those—parsons among them —who, while unable to offer any constructive scheme, captiously condemn .those who are actively endeavouring to cope with the evil. I note that at the Methodist Synod the loan advanced by the Unemployment Board for a building enterprise at Napier was condemned by one or two speakers, despite the fact that it has been repeatedly declared by honourable men that such loan was only made 'on the distinct condition that the money should be spent on wages, that interest was to be paid and the money repaid by a set time, when it will be available to flnanoe further work. 1 was glad to note that some members of the Synod did not allow prejudice to warp their Judgment, that they had receptive minds, and reoognißed that the members of the Unemployment Board are neither fools nor knaves, perpetrating jobbery, but honest men endeavouring to do their job faithfully and efficiently; and I am thankful that the majority of the Synod took a reasonable view of a muchdiscussed subject. I feel convinced that if that £BOOO had been advanced for the erection of a church, chapel or similar building no criticism would have been voiced, but that the attitude of the board would have been applauded by those who now so loudly condemn. —1 am, etc., AIBION.
