CHILDREN’S CLOTHES
TIPS FROM A DESIGNER. There arc many snags in dressmaking for children. If you ilo not, know them, then your efforts at devising a frock for Mary or a little suit for John will often fail. At a lecture at the Pains Academy of Dressmaking and Millinery—where pupils of all ages and nationalities arc taught, not only how to make their own clothes, hut also how to design them —Madame Jeanne Trois Fontaines, the principal, gave some extremely useful hints for making children's clothes.
First there is the type of material to consider. It must he very simple. All the plain materials, such as crepe de chine, georgette, shantung, or the patterned fabrics—small flower prints, cheeks, iflripcd voiles amt all the washing cottons —are suitable. Give both boys and girls pockets in their clothes. They must not be too high or too low. A pocket that lias a little embroidery on it, such as a spray of simple flowers or an animal motif on the girls’ frocks, will always appeal to them more than a plain pocket. tf it is a washing frock the embroidery should be done in a washing cotton or silk. The neck opening must lie small and well lilting—Hie square neck can have a fastening down one side—it is dress on over the hair. A round neck opening can have tiny bone rings sown round it with a riblinn or cord with tassels threaded through to draw if up. Or it ran he slit across Ihe top of Iho shoulder and made to fasten with buttons. Mover have a fastening on the back of a child's frock. Most children are so proud wlnm they can dross tliemsoivos—also it is a great help In a busy mother noL In have to do litis so fastenings should be whore they ran lie I;isio11o1 1 nr undone easily. One of tiio grealosl poiuls in Iho loeluro was In remember In provide for lengl honing ohdlios for growing children, at Iho same lime keeping them smart Alleralions, slie sojJ, must never look like alterations.
