WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT MATANGI. The third annual meeting of the Matangi Women's Institute was held in the hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs W. Trownson presided over a good gathering. Tin) meeting was opened with the reading of the Women’s Aspiration. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, and a report of the last general meeting was given by Airs Hodgson. Miss Patterson and Miss Barton were appointed tellers. A vote of thanks was accorded to 'Mr Swann for acting as auditor for the past year. The president, in her address, stressed the necessity of Hie institute taking a lead in clearing and beautifying the hall grounds. The annual report was read by Mrs W. Hodgson, and adopted. A 'hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the secretary for the splendid report. The financial report and balance-sheet was given by the treasurer, Mrs Tomlinson, and was adopted. It was decided that the annual subscription should be paid on or before March 1933.

An interesting letier was received from Rhonhouse Institute, in Scotland, thanking our institute for a gift of New Zealand butter.

An ail-day demonstration is to be given by Airs Harrison on Monday 28th in the hall to any of the institute members interested. The December meeting is to take the form of. a ■Christmas tree, eac-h member adopting and providing a gift for a poor child for the afternoon. The roll-call is to be “A favourite quotation."

Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the retiring president, secretary, treasurer, committee and press correspondent, for their work during the year. As there were only ten nominations for the new committee, there was no ballot, the following being elected: — President, Mrs W. Trownson; vicepresident, (Mrs Whewcll; secretary, Miss Whewcll; treasurer, 'Miss E. Nielsen; committee, .Mesdames Martini, Bryant, Dingle, J. B. Taylor, Dennett and Baird.

A very interesting demonstration on string-soled shoes was given by Mrs Trownson, and icing 'and decorating a -birthday cake, by Mrs -Buckingham. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mcsdames A. -McLennan, A. Janr.-json, D. McKenzie, and W. -Martini. AT WHATAWHATA. The monthly meeting of the Whatawhata Women’s Institute was held in the local hall on Friday, November 18. Mrs. Soper presided over a good attendance. Four new members were welcomed and enrolled. The annual report and balance-sheet .were read and adopted. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded member? of the outgoing committee. Members elected for the ensuing year ■were: —Mrs. Soper president, reelected; Mrs. McGibbons, vice-presi-dent; Mrs. Rowe secretary, re-elected; Ms. Sperry re-elected treasurer; Mrs. Barton re-elected; Mrs. Maisey, Mrs. Wilcock, Mrs. L. Johnstone and Miss Lumnoy; Press corresdondent, Mrs. Rowe; Mrs. R. Caldcr once again scored highest marks, followed by Mrs. Soper and Miss E. Rothwell, in the “Fancy Needlework” competition. The roll call “ My Favourite Pastime” was well responded to Mrs. Mcflibbons again holding the interest of the members with a new poem, “ The Mystic Singing Bird.” It was agreed (o have a Christmas Tree -for the children, arrangements for holding same are well in hand, a party of members under the leadership of Mrs. R. Calder holding themselves responsible for the decoration of the hall and tree. A demonstration on “ Smocking ’’ given by Mrs. Harsant, secretary of the Waikato Federation of Women's Institute, was much appreciated, as was also a short address on “ Institute ” matters.

Mrs, Barker proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Harsant, whirl) was carried with acclamation. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Calder, Caley, Barker and 11. Johnstone.
