MATAMATA BEATS ROTORUA,

A WIDE MARGIN

Matamata and Rotorua met at Matamat a on Saturday for the first challenge of the season for the Peace Gup. Mata-ma-ta, the holders, easily retained the trophy! Conditions, were ideal, and there was a good attendance. The visitors appeared much the hea\ler side, hut in the second half there was only one team in the picture. Carlson kicked off against the sun. Carroll fed Carlson, and the centre scored close in and goaled. Matamata 5, Rotorua 0. Carlson took a penalty from well out on the side line, but a good kick •went wide. Waerea broke through but failed to pass quickly enough, and a gTeat chance to score was lost. Matamata forced. Rotorua held the upper hand for some time, till Inman found the line at half-way. Carlson took a centring kick of Sumei•land’s and dummied two men to gain ground, but a forward pass from Inman to Wilson spoilt a chance. Malligan offside gave Sutherland a (Shot In front, but the Rotorua man missed a glorious chance. T. Thompson threw right out to Morrison; the •latter had a good chance to pot, hui preferred to pass and B. Inman relieved. Soloman fed Carroll, who cut in beautifully to send Wilson over for a try between the posts. Carlson goaled. Matamata 10, Rotorua 0. A Rotorua back tried a pot, which rebounded. Morrlnsvllle and Matamata provided the curtain-raiser for the Peace Cup match, but the visitors proved no match for the home team, who ran out winners by 24 to nil. Prominent players for Matamata ■were Roberts, Strong and Carter in the backs, with Swain and Campbell most conspicuous in the forwards. Harrison .was the best back for Morrinsville, and the forwards were an 'Bven lot.
