INQUIRY FROM ENGLAND. SOUTHLAND BEECH WANTED, WILL CREATE* BOOM. INVERCARGILL, Thursday. Inquiry has been received from England .by sawmillers of Southland for 9,000,000 ft. of Southland beech, to be used in the manufacture of motor bodies. On behalf of the sawmillers, the following statement was made to-day by Mr 1). J. Wesney:— “An inquiry has been received from London for a very large quantity of silver beech for motor-body work.- It is estimated that if business is forthcoming, steady work will be provided for 300 men on full time for about 18 months. This would embrace all workers in the beech areas. If the order eventuates, it will create a boom in the industry, and beside providing labour for the men themselves, it wiii assist the railways, and will provide work et Bluff. Indirectly,- several industries and various tradespeople would benefit.’’ It Is understod that the negotiations are continuing.
