FACING VITAL ISSUES.
(To ithe Editor.) Sir, —Mr Seymour’s (belief in the “ divine right of the economio «ys- j tem,” is almost as pathetic as the superstitious fear with which the ; African negro regards his witch doc- j tor, and he seeks to dismiss the I “ new ideas" put forth by several i correspondents, with a convincing little parable, the truth contained in which is correct, as far as it goes, but which does not alter the fundamentals at stake. Mr Seymour Ishould realise that the present economic system is man-made, and is in no way comparable to the laws of nature. Mankind ha's built, or rather, has allowed to. accumulate around itself, an economic system which however "well it may have served its purpose during past centuries, is not adequate for the i needs of the 20th. century, and this J system will be the means of crush- j in'g the race if man does not insist i on making himself the master. Mr j Valder pointed this out in his recent ' article “Facing Vital Issues,” published recently. We cannot get away from, the “ fundamental ” fact that thousands of willing hands are to-day divorced from the needs of humanity, and the storehouses of the world are full to overflowing with the very things folk are desiring. There must be a way out, if only we can lift our eyes to peer above the fogs created by “ authordoxy,” and It will be for the unauthordox explorers to lead the race from its economic maze to a New Jerusalem, wherein humanity will have first consideration. Not so very many years ago, autbordox rolk said Columbus was mad, but time has proved that mad he certainly was not, and although! I confess to knowing nothing of the workings of “ new economics,” its exponents certainly seem to be departing from the beaten . track and show an unwillingness to accept unconditionally, the doses of depression and suffering administered by our . present system.—l am, etc., EVOLUTION.
